Doing business in the nude - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Working together bare - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog On the off chance that you must be bare, youd should be buff. This statement is from The Naked Corporation by Don Tapscott and David Ticoll, one of the books Im as of now perusing. They contend (and convincingly with the goal that) organizations are entering a time of straightforwardness, ie. that a portion of the significant powers influencing markets and social orders progressively favor those associations who are transparent. That during a time where the expense of correspondence is continually dropping, the world in all probability WILL realize what goes on inside your association whether you need it or not. Heres my interpretation of this: Yaaaaaaay!!! Receptiveness and straightforwardness are acceptable, and its difficult to be cheerful and make the most of your activity in an organization that expects you to stay quiet. I think our regular state is to be open and offer data, and we can loosen up more when were permitted to do that. For an extra motivation behind why straightforwardness works, read Non zero by Robert Wright. This book contends that the individuals who participate will consistently triumph over the individuals who fight one another, not for each situation yet over the long haul. What's more, the individuals who can be open and straightforward can collaborate much more adequately than the individuals who keep everything mystery. A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most famous articles. The Performance Management Software Market is Heating Up - Workology

The Performance Management Software Market is Heating Up - Workology The Performance Management Software Market is Heating Up There’s a sea change happening around employee performance management. HR and business leaders are realizing that the old model of annual performance reviews is ineffective for today’s workforce, with the majority of HR professionals agreeing that a Continuous Performance Management ® model is superior to an annual or bi-annual review process. The Performance Management Software Market is Heating Up This is a reflection of the changing nature of the workplace in general. Hierarchical business models are rapidly being replaced with more flexible, adaptable and agile cross-functional teams whose work is powered by conversations that take place up, down and across the organization. And when it comes to managing these types of teams, processes that are rooted in continuous conversations, agile and transparent goals, and culture-based models for coaching and career development are vastly more effective. In short, more and more companies are recognizing that Continuous Performance Management works. But in order to operationalize it, you need robust processes in place, supported by technology that can bring all of these elements together and facilitate these processes throughout complex organizations. “None of these tools works without a plan; you can’t just ‘turn them on’ and expect everyone to suddenly have better performance,” said Josh Bersin, world-known HR industry analyst and founder of Bersin by Deloitte. “So you do have to design a process people understand. But with the right amount of HR strategy and consulting they offer a transformational change.” According to McKinsey, organizations are three times more likely to outperform the competition if they have an effective performance management (PM) system. But while many large Enterprise Planning companies such as SuccessFactors, Workday and Oracle all have performance management solutions, these remain largely designed around year-end reviews rather than continuous performance management models. Why Writing a Chronological Resume is More Important Than Most People ThinkWhile most companies, and some even employed individuals in some cases, seem to be on the lookout for how to write a chronological resume, what's often missing from the equation is a simple understanding of how they actually are. How many times have you heard of someone leaving a company that they were employed by because the company did not follow through with the requirement that they provided them with? This is an amazing testament to the effectiveness of a chronological resume. A job seeker will not see the same requirements that he or she may have expected if they are presented with a resume that is not well-written, organized, and organized in its own right. This means a prospective employer must focus on how a resume should be formatted, structured, as well as how a person writes it in order to truly be a step ahead of the competition. Many people think that since a resume is an offer to the organization they are working for, which gives them powerful skills to seek a job elsewhere, they do not need to provide the reasons why they want the position. While a business can choose to ignore those reasons, not all business sectors are cut the same. As a result, a chronological resume may actually be more important than you think. It is a known fact that a prospective employer may search your past work history to gain insight as to your possible performance on the job. This is where a well-organized and well-written resume is so valuable. A potential employer needs to understand why you were hired, who in the organization hired you, when you first started working there, how long you worked there, the tasks you completed, the complaints lodged against you, the deadlines that were met or not met, and other pertinent information that relates to your application for the job. When employers know what you have done in the past, they will be able to recognize whether or not they are hiring the rig ht people. This is why having a well-planned resume is such a valuable asset. Job seekers do not want to put themselves in a bad situation, and they want the chances of landing a job to be as open as possible.Writing a resume is also an important skill. A prospective employer will read what you have written about yourself, and what you expect to get from the company. This is a time to put across your true feelings and your honest thoughts. You don't have to state every single detail about your personal life to show how you can handle the demands of the job, but at least provide an example that other job seekers can take with them when they come to apply for a job.Another reason that writing a chronological resume is valuable is because the prospective employer will then have the opportunity to see what you can offer the organization. Perhaps you will not be ideal for the role that they are trying to fill, but they will be able to use your accomplishments to fill out their understand ing of the company. Even if you have been employed by that organization for several years, the future employer will be able to review your achievements over the years to determine whether or not they should bring you on board. It's important to remember that if a company is looking for a new organizational leaders, they will need to see what qualities they need to see before they make a decision. The Smart Guide to Effortless Networking

The Smart Guide to Effortless Networking The Smart Guide to Effortless Networking 6 Nov 2015 Simone Thompson   The Art of Networking When searching for a new job or attempting to develop your career, we are often encouraged to network.   Networking is a brilliant way to gain exposure and build credibility which is essential for your success. So why do some of us find it so difficult? Networking is a word that can strike fear into the heart of many people. Others absolutely love networking, yet they don’t get any results for all their efforts. Did you know, there are tried and tested methods which can help you in becoming a masterful networker?   I’m sure we all have examples of times when it hasn’t been easy to pick up the phone or enter a crowded room to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. In the past, I have been guilty of standing in the corner quietly hoping someone would come to talk to me, whilst also wishing that nobody would notice me so I could quickly leave.   That strategy wasn’t entirely successful! As you know, networking is all about building relationships and trust - it is imperative to understand that when you need a sponsor, mentor, new job, or referee, it is already too late to begin the process of networking.   It is time to start viewing every interaction as a chance to show yourself as your own personal brand and to think carefully about what that means to you.   One excellent networker makes it her goal to view every meeting as a potential connection not only for her and her clients but also for her colleagues and her friends.   She constantly asks questions and thinks of people or ways to help solve problems.   She then connects those people.   Simple!     She also highlighted that she nurtures these relationships as an ongoing priority. To help you in your job search, we gathered information from some very successful networkers which we would like to share. Here is our quick guide: Set an Intention Firstly and most importantly â€" forget about how uncomfortable you might feel â€" think about attending events with the intention of helping others Be choosy about which events you attend â€" do your research Decide how many people you will engage with â€" start with 3 people if you’re feeling nervous, rather than flitting around everyone in the room Have a meaningful conversation with those 3 people â€" after being introduced / introducing yourself, ask them how their business area is going â€" what challenges are they facing? Personal Branding Think carefully about how you present yourself â€" are you giving yourself the best chance to be memorable for the right reasons? Dress appropriately for the function / audience Maintain eye contact when speaking to people â€" do not let your gaze wander for a more ‘interesting prospect’ Smile Do not thrust your business card onto anyone â€" instead ask for theirs When the conversation ends, graciously move on Ask Questions Be endlessly curious about people and the challenges they may be facing in their current job / situation Get specific on one small area or problem, so as not to overwhelm yourself Notice trends or patterns in their responses and think how / who can help solve the problems Connect Begin to store away / file information on who you have met and who can help them with a specific issue Follow up on any connections you made - if you gathered business cards (and you should!), drop your new connections a note or a quick phone call with an interesting article or news piece that is relevant to your discussion Be generous in introducing people who may be able to offer a solution or an alternative viewpoint â€" Put people in touch who might  be able and willing to help Become Indispensable It takes time to get to know people and how you can help them -   keep showing up at events with the intention to help so that you become known as the ‘go to’ person within your business or social networks Good luck in your networking efforts! Refresh Your Cover Letter This Summer

Revive Your Cover Letter This Summer Revive Your Cover Letter This Summer Rather than letting your pursuit of employment mull in the pooch long periods of summer, focus in, get a super cold refreshment, and give your introductory letter a check up. Here are four zones to concentrate on: Patch up Your Template On the off chance that you've utilized a similar essential layout for each introductory letter, you should think about a redesign. The primary thing to take a gander at is whether your introductory letter is the correct length. As this post on CareerBuilder calls attention to, Messaged introductory letters ought to be incorporated inside the body of the email and be constrained to two sections, while those faxed or sent ought to be three to five passages. Remember that most recruiting directors will examine your introductory letter for close to a couple of moments. To expand your eyeball time, compose your composition into scaled down lumps and concentrate the most significant data toward the start of each section. Revive Your Keywords In this period of mechanized screening programming, it's a higher priority than any time in recent memory to have a watchword rich introductory letter. Utilizing the proper words can help get your application past the electronic guardians and before a genuine live HR agent. There are two or three different ways to create catchphrase records for your introductory letter. Perhaps the most ideal ways is to peruse work postings, blog entries, and articles in your industry. Notice portrayals and key terms that show up again and again; those are the words to concentrate on. In the event that you incline toward a robotized approach, take a stab at utilizing the free watchword arranging apparatus at Google AdWords. You need to make a free record (connected to a current Gmail address), however it permits you to create arrangements of catchphrases identified with your point. Reconsider Your Signoff In the event that your introductory letter closes with Genuinely, it might be a great opportunity to roll out an improvement. Signoffs-officially called valedictions- are liable to patterns simply like whatever else. We've expounded on email signoff manners previously, and huge numbers of similar standards apply. Earnestly, Cordially, and Yours Truly are somewhat antiquated. Much obliged to You, in any case, never becomes dated. Another great decision is a minor departure from I anticipate got notification from you. This signoff shows self-assurance and positive thinking. Audit Your Grammar Each time you roll out an improvement to your introductory letter, you open the entryway for mistakes to sneak their way in. You may feel that grammatical errors aren't significant or that the recruiting supervisor ought to have the option to look past them and see what an important and talented representative you'd be. Nonetheless, linguistic mistakes in your introductory letter and resume show one of two things to HR: you're either thoughtless or uninformed. Neither one of the ones is probably going to find you a line of work. As Nanci Lamborn, a 20-year HR veteran, calls attention to, an introductory letter filled with composing blunders sends me the message that these competitors are either terribly ailing in fundamental abilities or they are just languid. I have even observed competitors incorrectly spell their own names. Don't let an indiscreet blunder or innocent error shield you from getting your fantasy work! Grammarly's internet spelling and sentence structure checker is your first line of safeguard in getting those annoying syntax goofs. Presently go through the sprinklers. What Kelso Knows about Work

What Kelso Knows about Work What Kelso Knows about Work The vast majority of what he said was advised to a large number of us by astute guardians, coaches and companions its significant that adolescents, as a gathering, tend not to tune in to this sort of advicethat is except if its originating from Mila Kunis BF. So whatd he need to state? Peruse on: 1) Opportunity looks a parcel like difficult work. While the facts confirm that he didnt concoct this bit of shrewdness, it sure sounded significantly all the more persuading coming out of his wry smile than it does getting out and about on Facebook in e-card design. Be that as it may, underneath the buzzword, this is as evident as its at any point been. With innovation getting increasingly available and more straightforward to utilize, it tends to be anything but difficult to believe that extremely difficult work has no spot in this world. Nothing could be farther from reality. Nose to the grindstone, one foot before the other, and head down can have significantly more effect in a workforce that is progressively social, clamorous and mechanized. 2) Never quit your first job until you have your next activity. Ashton (Chris) Kutcher laid out the employments hed been working since he was 13 and clarified how he could never leave an occupation until he had another employment. Hes a definitive aloof applicant! Truly however, in todays economy, this is exhortation that bodes well for pretty much everybody except particularly passage level occupation searchers, who can be quite naive about their reasonable value in an unstable economy. 3) I never had a vocation that I was unreasonably useful for. This one didnt go very as viral as the others however it was MY top pick. As you ascend the profession stepping stool its simple to overlook the occupations that got you there-the managers who appeared to be terrible at that point yet shown you so much; the required undertakings that appeared to be depleting yet gave your day structure; the alarming check to-check presence that indicated you the estimation of cash these all have significance. With outsourcing and unexpected work turning out to be increasingly basic nowadays, the vast majority of us will have to return to our underlying foundations, doing modest assignments at new companies, working late into the night on a side task. Primary concern? In the event that Ashton Kutcher can clear up Cheerio dust, you can without a doubt finish that spreadsheet. 4) The world is comprised of individuals no more astute than you. The really rousing piece of Kutchers discourse was something that nobody at any point let me know; I needed to learn it for myself. Its simple to take a gander at lights and imagine that they know more than you do. There are a lot of individuals in the business world who will say That wont work, we previously attempted it. Yet, while its critical to gain from the encounters of others, its likewise significant to understand that your thoughts and ideas are as important as anybody elses. 5) Dont carry on with a real existence, construct an actual existence. Making your own predetermination seems like something a youthful, wonderful individual would state, however that doesnt mean its false. Rather than checking all through an occupation that doesnt fulfill with individuals that dont value your commitments, increasingly more employment searchers are searching for elective methods of working. Building a life is a long ways from simply living. When youre working 40-80 hour work weeks, it can get exceptionally simple to overlook that. Watch the entire discourse here.

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom For Greater Productivity, Try 52/17 Over five years ago, I wrote one of my first posts for the Fast Track blog. The article was about how I was able to hold down four paid jobs in addition to raising a toddler. Fast forward to today, when I am working on at least a dozen paid jobs and am responsible for an additional child. I’m still using the same system, and it’s still working. One of the things I mentioned in the article is how I leave two hours per day for last minute tasks, essentially only scheduling enough productive work for six hours. During the remaining time, I manage administrative tasks, networking calls and gatherings, media interviews, research, and yes â€" downtime. Introducing 52/17 Julia Gifford is a self-proclaimed Canadian born tech-enthusiast who currently works for the Draugiem Group. Gifford published an article on TheMuse.com detailing her company’s research study on employee work flow. Using time-tracking and productivity appDeskTime, Draugiem looked at the habits of the most productive employees and pinpointed the work style leading to an incredible ability to get things done. What’s the strategy? It turns out I wasn’t so far off in my approach to six hours of productive work and two hours of non-productive work or breaks. Draugiem found that the most productive 10 percent of DeskTime users work for 52 minutes without stopping, break for 17 minutes, and then get back to the task at hand. They repeat this technique every hour. If this sounds familiar, you might have heard of a similar approach called the Pomodoro Method. Cited by Gifford, the Pomodoro Techniqueis a time management method that uses a timer to break down work into intervals of focus and rest. These intervals are called “pomodoros” (or “tomatoes” in Italian), after those tomato-shaped kitchen timers. Pomodoros are separated by short breaks for distractions, daydreaming, snacking, etc. It works by choosing a task to work on exclusively for 25 minutes, setting a timer, working on the task until the timer rings, and then taking a five minute break. After going through this cycle four times, you take a longer (about 15 minutes) break. The Magic of the Creative Sprint Why do methods like 52/17 and Pomodoro work so well? How can people who don’t even work a full day accomplish so much more than those who clock way more hours? Gifford wrote that the reason the top 10 percent of productive employees are able to get the most done during a comparatively short period of time is that every interval of working time is treated as a sprint. During the 52 minutes, they work with intense purpose, and then during the 17 minutes, they remove themselves completely from the task so that they can be fully focused and ready for the next sprint. Human beings, apparently, are actually built to sprint. The body is not meant to sit for eight hours straight, so breaks on-the-hourimprove both productivity and health. The brain doesn’t love focusing for long periods either, and according to Gifford, concentration is like a muscle that needs to rest. Even if you’re a conscientious employee and love your work, doing it for hours on end will inevitably result in boredom and flagging attention. Psychologically and physically, being overworked is worse than being underworked. For the rest of the piece, check out QuickBases Fast Track blog.

1 easy (but very useful) thing you could do today to prepare for life after graduation University of Manchester Careers Blog

1 easy (but very useful) thing you could do today to prepare for life after graduation University of Manchester Careers Blog Reflecting from scratch can be a daunting task. Just you and blank sheet of paper. Where do you start? With work? University? Extra-curricular activities? What’s important? What’s not? What’s useful for sorting out your career? Or valuable to tell potential employers? How much detail is enough? How do you take action on your reflections to recognise your strengths, make improvements, make decisions about your future? Grossman (2009) sheds some light on the process of reflection, the characteristics of ineffective reflection and discusses some of the ways we can become more skilled and effective reflectors. One of these ways us through the process of scaffolding (if you are a GTA, you may well have come across this concept). Scaffolding is an important strategy we use to help learners develop from novices to experts in skills, knowledge and understanding in your subject area we use techniques and activities to bridge gaps in knowledge and ability.   There are career management tools which can scaffold career development and help us become experts in ourselves. Using these tools can help us make the most effective use of a blank sheet of paper by giving us some parameters for our thinking and a bit of guidance. Self-reflection without support can be a bit like wandering in a wilderness without a map. Photo: Cairngorm plateau in winter. D Gillie We should be experts on ourselves already, shouldn’t we? After all, who knows us better? Grossman found that students asked to reflect on their development most often wrote inferences without providing any supporting evidence or insight into the intellectual and practical processes that enabled the student to do or understand something. From the point of view of careers consultants, something similar often happens when we begin to explore career possibilities with students by asking opening questions such as ‘What are you good at?’, ‘What do you enjoy?. Students may not be sure what they are good at or what they enjoy. If they can state what they enjoy or what they are good at, some may struggle to provide the evidence to uphold those statements. We can make reflection more productive and accurate by providing structure scaffolding â€" in the form of some very simple to use tools that are available on the Careers Service website: Assess your personality styles and preferred working styles using The Type Dynamics Indicator. The Career Interests Inventory provides ideas and suggestions of preferred careers based on the pattern of interests (your personality or identity) suggested by your answers. These are not predictive tools â€" their value does not lie in telling you what your career will be. Their value lies in providing an opportunity to think in a focused and constructive way about who you are and what you might like your future to be like and then take the steps to get there. You could also complete one of these assessments as preparation for meeting with a careers consultant â€" the results may give you specific topics you would like to focus on. Reading Grossman,R . (2009) Structures for facilitating student learning. College Teaching, 57(1), 15-22. http://dx.doi.org/10.3200/CTCH.57.1.15-22 Although this paper is written from the point of view of faculty member who is training teachers, the insight into the reflective process is valuable and, significantly, accessible to a non-expert in pedagogy or cognitive psychology. Morin, A. (2004) A neurocognitive and sociological model of self-awareness. Genetic, Social General Psychology Monographs,130(3), 97-224. http://dx.doi.org/10.3200/MONO.130.3.197-224 A more technical paper, but Dr Morin’s work on the nuts and bolts of reflection and self-awareness is insightful and thought provoking. Figure 1. in the paper,   a diagrammatic representation of Morin’s model of self-awareness,   is particularly interesting. How often do we recognise that some of our self-awareness arises as a result of books we read, programmes or films we watch, seeing ourselves in mirrors or through interacting with people? Why Did You Leave Your Job

Why Did You Leave Your Job This is a fairly common interview question and oh, by the way, it is also on every job application too.   Sometimes, the reason employers ask this question is to see how and what your response will be, not so much the words you use, but the emotions you connect with the experience. Sounds kind of heady I know, lets keep it simple. Candidate A Candidate A was part of a company-wide downsizing.   When asked in the interview why he left, Candidate A goes on and on. He blames bad corporate strategy and the history leading up to the companys decision to layoff employees.   But wait, Candidate A goes on further and talks about no matter how hard he worked, he could never please his immediate supervisor.   Wait, there is still more.   Candidate A confesses that some of his technical skills and industry knowledge might not have been up to date. Yikes.   Too much information. What the interviewer hears is all sorts of reasons NOT to bring Candidate A in for another interview.   There is emotional baggage not to mention a deficiency in skills. Candidate B Candidate B was part of a company wide downsizing too.   Her answer to the question went something like this. XYZ company had unfortunately lost some of their key accounts and as a result had to eliminate positions.   All but two people in my department were let go. Candidate B didnt shoot herself in the foot by providing too much information.   She stated the facts. Answering this question requires some rehearsing.   Your first attempt will most likely not be the best.   Try to craft your answer on paper.   Bullet point the key point(s) you want to make.   There is a fine line between sounding rote and sounding confident. Additionally, the answer you provide should sound null of emotion or perhaps empathetic.   Never, ever blame anyone during the interview.   Sure, companies make bad choices, but there is no value in pointing out flaws, errors, problems, or issues.   Negative, emotionally-charged answers will always work against the candidate. If you have emotional baggage connected to the unfair or unjust termination, then you might need to work on that first because it WILL come out during the interview.
